Why We Quote Restoration Timelines in Months, Not Promises

Our conviction is unfashionable in a sales conversation: a full frame-off restoration takes 12 to 18 months when everything cooperates, and something always doesn't. Shops that quote six months aren't faster — they're either planning a lower standard, planning your car as filler work between insurance jobs, or planning to have the "unforeseen issues" conversation with you at month five. We'd rather lose the impatient client on day one than the trusting one at month nine.

The timeline isn't padding; it's physics and chemistry. Metal must be verified before body, body before paint, paint before interior — sequence collapses if any stage rushes the one beneath it. That discipline is the entire architecture of our documented build process, and it's why our delivered dates and quoted dates live in the same month.

What Actually Delays a Classic Car Restoration

Why Rushing a Restoration Ruins It — the Chemistry of Patience

Some clocks in this work cannot be negotiated with. Filler and primer shrink as they cure — block a panel too early and the wave appears after paint, permanently. Paint films need full flash and cure windows or they trap solvents that pop in the first hot month. Fresh finishes need cure time before cutting, buffing, or ceramic. Every one of these chemical clocks runs in days and weeks, and a six-month quote has already decided to ignore several of them.

Sequence has its own physics: gaps must be set before paint because paint thickness changes fitment; wiring goes in before interior because the dash comes out once; the engine bay finishes before the drivetrain lands. Compress the sequence and stages start damaging each other — fresh paint scratched by assembly, new upholstery stained by mechanical work. Rushed restorations aren't faster versions of good ones. They're different, worse products that merely look similar on delivery day — for a while. We also counsel timing-minded owners honestly: start teardown in summer and the car is painted by spring, sorted by early summer, and on the road for the fall show season.
