Here's what two decades taught us: restorations don't fail from lack of skill — they fail from lack of sequence and lack of records. Work done out of order gets done twice. Work done without photographs might as well not have happened, because in this market unproven work is unpaid-for work at resale. So our process isn't a brochure graphic; it's the operating system every build runs on, and the photo record it produces follows your car for the rest of its life.
The sequence below applies whether we're running every service in the building or a targeted scope from the services menu. Stages compress for partial projects; they never reorder.
Before anything is promised, the car gets told the truth about. We decode the VIN and trim tags, verify drivetrain stampings against identity claims, and inspect structure with the same flashlight-magnet-borescope routine we published in our hidden-rust guide. You get the findings in writing: what the car is, what it needs, what it doesn't, and a staged scope with the contingency zones flagged honestly.
This stage kills bad projects cheaply — the kindest thing an assessment can do — and gives good projects a plan worth trusting. It's also where the budget conversation happens with open eyes; the framework is the one we published in what a frame-off restoration actually costs.
Disassembly is slower here than owners expect, deliberately. Every component is photographed in place, removed, labeled, and inventoried — hardware bagged by assembly, date-coded parts flagged and protected, the whole car reduced to a documented catalog that makes reassembly accurate a year later. On full builds the body comes off the frame or onto the rotisserie per our frame-off discipline.
Stripping to bare metal ends the guessing: the true rust map appears, the previous repairs confess, and the assessment's contingency ranges resolve into real numbers. You see every photo before the plan finalizes — good news and bad, no curation. Long-lead parts (plating, upholstery, machine work) get ordered now, which is the single biggest schedule protector in the whole process.
The foundation stage. Structural and body metal gets cut out and welded right — floors, quarters, channels, frames — then sealed with epoxy, seam sealer, and cavity wax against the Gulf climate that caused most of it. Nothing cosmetic is allowed to start until the steel underneath has passed inspection.
While metal proceeds, the mechanical benches run in parallel: engine measured, machined, and blueprint-assembled; transmission and axle rebuilt; brakes, steering, and suspension renewed or upgraded to the agreed spec. Parallel staging is how a disciplined shop saves months without cutting corners — the drivetrain is finished and waiting when the body is ready, never the reverse.
Panel fit gets set with real hardware before primer — gaps first, because paint thickness changes fitment. Then the cycles that separate finishes: epoxy, high-build, guide coat, block; repeat until raking light and a straightedge agree. Color goes on in our in-house booth against sprayed test cards you approved, followed by full cure windows and cut-and-buff. No stage in the building rewards patience more, or punishes its absence longer.
The catalog from Stage Two earns its keep: drivetrain lands first, then the harness (labeled and fused, while the dash is still out), then glass, brightwork timed fresh from plating, and finally the interior — fitted last so nothing mechanical can threaten it. Every fastener from the teardown inventory returns to its documented home or gets replaced with correct-style hardware, photographed as it goes.
This is where cheap restorations rattle and ours don't: assembly order, correct clips, and torque discipline are invisible in photos and unmistakable from the driver's seat.
"Assembled" is not "finished." Every build gets systems verification — fluids, pressures, charging, lights, gauges — then real road miles: alignment confirmed, tune dialed, squeaks and seeps hunted down on a punch list that only we would notice. We drive your car before you do, because delivery day should be a celebration, not a shakedown.
You take home the car and its complete record: every stage photograph, the build sheets, the parts documentation, the wiring diagram if we made one. The binder is part of the product — the honest history that separates our deliveries from "trust me, it was done right."
